Autobots Transformed?

Still digging in our old cabinet, I found my old-school Transformers robots. I said old-school because they were the original robot toys of the 80's. I got a Beachcomber mini Autobot as a gift when I was a kid. With last year's showing of the Transformers movie, toy stores were again flooded with these robots.

I'm a great Transformers fan but I was quite dissapointed on the
build quality of the newer toys. I got a small Jazz of the new Transformers version and compared it with my Beachcomber 80's toy. There was a definitely a difference.

The plastic material of the newer Jazz puts it to shame compared with the 80's Beachcomber.
The newer toy felt cheap and the color was dull. The plastic also breaks easily. The tires suck unlike the 80's toy who sport Dunlop branded tires. Heck, the newer toy does not even have the Autobot insignia hologram that changes color when you touch it.

I thought the not-so-good build quality were confined to the cheaper versions (priced around 250 pesos) but I have also observed this on the higher-end robots being displayed at the malls (priced around 1000-2000 pesos).

Where have all the good toys gone?...

Your Ruggedness: Neo eXplore X2

The Neo X2 is derived from the 2nd Gen Intel Classmate PC. This chick sports an improved look from the original X1 model. It still sports an Intel Celeron 900MHz processor though. It has 512MB of DDR2 memory, 2 USB ports, WiFi, and camera. Noteworthy is the 40GB of HDD space. These eXplore PC's are built for the rugged type of use. The keyboard still seems to be small but the touch pad and buttons are huge but ok. Price is around 19,000 pesos at the malls. Another advantage is that it already comes with Windows (Starter or Home Editions). This is a very good ultra-portable and are safe for your kids to

UPDATE (08/09): This model has been phased out but earlier priced at 12,000 pesos.

Acer Aspireone: Coolness at the right price

The Acer AspireOne is a beauty. Similarly priced to an Eee PC 8G but with a bigger 8.9 inch screen, this babe sports the latest Intel Atom processor at 1.6GHz. The rest of the specs are in line with the Eee PC series. Ahm, that's 1Gig of DDR2 memory, 8Gig Solid-State Disk (SSD), 3 USB ports, WiFi and a webcam. Noteworthy is the bigger keyboard if you are not up to the smaller Eee PC keys. Another good point is the 2 memory card slots to make up for the 8Gig only SSD. Price is around 18,800 pesos at the malls.

It looks sleeker than the Eee if you ask me. (I have an Eee PC though) It's got a nice shine on the cover and comes in blue and white - for now. Great idea on the orange-colored bezel on the sides which add style on the overall appearance.

It's a good buy specially if your budget is strictly less than 20,000 pesos

Toys 'R McD's

I happen to come across a few old toys of mine while looking for something in our old cabinet. Two of them were toys from McDonald's. One is a pull-back car and a burger transformer robot. I played with them again (so ok, there's a cut scene here of me reminiscing my childhood) and found they were still functional. I mean, the pull-back car
was still running and the burger robot, well, still transforming.

One thing I like with the toys of McD's is their quality. The plastic used on the toys doesn't feel cheap and they don't break easily. I'm not promoting any fast food restaurant here but you can't help but notice and compare the different toys from different food chains.

Give credit where it is due. I give it to the toys of McD's on this one.
